Restore and Protect Lewisham's Rivers, says Josh
The mass death of fish in Lewisham’s Pool River should be a wake-up call for Councils and communities, say Liberal Democrats.
“While the Thames dominates the map, London’s smaller rivers like the Ravensbourne, Quaggy and the Pool River are just as vital for wildlife and local people,” says Lewisham campaigner Josh Matthews. “An incident like this can undo years of progress. We know that endangered eels are among the species affected last week.”
Pollution can enter waterways due to poorly maintained drains, road runoff and misconnected plumbing. It can also be caused by deliberate dumping.
“We need a joined-up plan between Lewisham, other boroughs and the Mayor of London to restore and protect our rivers whether from environmental crime or simple neglect,” said Josh.
