Labour Mayor cuts crucial Lewisham bus service
From May 2026, the 54 bus route through Lewisham has been cut by 17% from six buses an hour to five along the entire route.
The route between Woolwich and Elmer's End serves Blackheath, Catford and Bellingham as well as Lewisham Town Centre - it will now see increased crowding and long waits thanks to Sadiq Khan's decision to reduce capacity by more than 1200 per day in each direction.
Lib Dem Mayoral candidate, Josh Matthews called it “a nonsensical decision that will make commuting harder and do nothing to discourage car traffic.”
“Our communities are already struggling with congestion and air pollution and it is crucial that we tackle them. The Mayor should be doing all he can to make it easier to use public transport and leave the car at home. This is the exact opposite of that.”
As ever, with Labour in power at the Town Hall, City Hall and national government, there's nobody else to blame.
Restore the 54
We call on Labour Mayor, Sadiq Khan to reverse his cuts to the 54 bus route, which provides a valuable connection for residents of Blackheath, Lewisham, Catford and beyond.
