Help us Fix Politics... for Lewisham
Politics has been failing for decades - but as voters become more and more divided, Britain's old-fashioned politics could mean disaster.
Public services need long term solutions, businesses need stability, protecting the environment requires accountability, every community needs proper representation, and all voters should feel their voices are heard - that their votes matter. Our current political system is failing us on all fronts.
And minor adjustments won't do. If we want to fix politics we need to fix the fundamental problem - the voting system.
At a time when the country is deeply polarised, and the two-party system has been shattered, the “First Past the Post” system makes things worse, not better. The local election results prove it.
The Green Party now has absolute power in Lewisham, even though they only got 44% of the vote
Last time, Labour won every single seat and had no opposition at all with just over 50%.
In parts of the country, Reform UK has won control of councils even though most people voted against them.
Now imagine results like these in the next general election. Our voting system is more likely than ever before to hand unchecked power to one party on a tiny share of the vote - sidelining millions of voters, leaving the majority of the country voiceless and angry.
Whichever party “wins” the next election - most of the country loses.
That is why we need fair, equal votes before the next General Election. We need a proportional system that requires politicians to work together, and to govern for the whole country, not just the loudest minority.
Fixing our politics isn’t a side issue - it’s a central to fixing everything else.
