Liberal Democrats scored a significant win at City Hall on the 2nd of July when the London Assembly passed a motion for more democratic local council elections – with members of every party except Reform UK voting in favour.

Even though Lib Dems have done very well out of the current system, such as winning every single seat in Richmond, the party has long campaigned for a fairer, more proportional voting system.

Gareth Roberts, Assembly Member for South West London and also Leader of Richmond Council, described winning 54 out of 54 seats as undemocratic. It’s the sort of thing that happens “when an election was designed by Putin and executed by Kim Jong-un.”

The Lib Dem motion was supported by members of three other parties and passed by 11 votes to 5.
