Liberal Democrat Mayoral Candidate Chris Maines visited the Old Tidemill Community Gardens to demonstrate his support for campaigners fighting to preserve the tranquil gardens in the centre of Deptford.
“This is a Council-owned site being sold to developers to build primarily luxury flats. It is the sort of decision the Labour Council takes when they have no effective opposition.” says Chris Maines.
The community run gardens provide a much need play space for children in Deptford and volunteers run regular gardening and cooking workshops. The Council obtained pocket park funding from a previous Mayor of London to create the green space but has now marketed the site to private developers.
“This is an amazing space in the centre of a very urban area. The plans need to be modified to include it in any new development.” says the Liberal Democrat candidate.
“It is sad the Council has ignored the hard work by members of the local community, who created the green space. They feel their voices has been ignored.”
It is a strong argument to end the one party power in Lewisham. We need a strong opposition that will ensure decisions are challenges, alternatives considered and other voices are heard.”
The planning application has been submitted to the Mayor of London to see whether it also meets the planning policies set out in the London Plan. It has been challenged by all party group of GLA members concerned at the loss of the green space. It appears the Council has decided to wait until after the local elections to proceed with the process.
