World Aids Day 2023

On World AIDS Day, we reflect on those we've lost and pledge to eradicate AIDS-related deaths and eliminate HIV transmission by 2030.

The Liberal Democrats have consistently advocated for evidence-based approaches to HIV, AIDS, and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), calling for increased funding for research and services.

We have consistently supported free NHS access to PrEP and the wider availability of HIV testing and treatment, including opt-out testing in accident and emergency settings (championed by long-standing APPG on HIV and AIDS member Baroness Barker). Holding the Conservative government accountable for their handling of HIV matters and insufficient investment in sexual health services, our longstanding support includes backing an amendment for free PrEP on the NHS, launching a 2020 policy paper, and urging action on rising HIV diagnoses among young people in 2021. Most recently, we have continued to champion opt-out HIV testing, where trials have already identified 580 HIV cases since April 2022.

The Liberal Democrats remain committed to ending the HIV epidemic and ensuring universal access to vital prevention and treatment services, with key commitments:

☑️ Ensure universal access to HIV prevention and treatment.
☑️ Eradicate stigma and discrimination linked to HIV.
☑️ Promote widespread testing.
☑️ Strive to eliminate transmission in England by 2030.
