Lib Dem membership in Lewisham up by nearly a fifth since election

The Liberal Democrats in Lewisham have seen a surge in new members over the past two weeks, with membership up 16% since the general election was called.

It comes as the Liberal Democrats reach their highest ever membership nationally, with over 101,768 members.

14,000 new members across the country have joined the Liberal Democrats in the two weeks since the General Election was announced and over 50,000 members have joined since last year’s EU referendum,

Bobby Dean, the Lib Dems’ prospective candidate for Lewisham Deptford, said:

“More and more people in Lewisham are joining the Liberal Democrats – which comes as no surprise. We’re the only proper opposition to a Government that is hellbent on delivering a hard Brexit.

“We are going into the election bigger than ever before, with a clear cause and growing momentum.”

Emily Frith, our candidate for Lewisham East, added:

“For anyone dismayed by the Conservatives’ disastrous national agenda, or by Labour’s failings in Lewisham, the Liberal Democrats are the real alternative.

“We’re fighting a good fight on all fronts, whether it’s against the mad dash to a hard Brexit, or against cuts to local services.”

John Russell, our candidate for Lewisham West and Penge, said:

“The ongoing, record-breaking growth of the Lib Dems’ membership shows that there’s already plenty of enthusiasm for our party and its policies.

“But we cannot stop there. Britain needs a strong opposition. It will get one by electing Liberal Democrats to Parliament and on to local councils.”
