Lewisham Liberal Democrats are calling upon Sadiq Khan to urgently extend new air pollution measures to cover all of Lewisham.
Every year there are 116 early deaths due to air pollution in Lewisham. The greatest impact is on children and the elderly, as well as those with existing respiratory problems.
Starting in 2019 Central London will have an Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) which will charge polluting vehicles to drive through the zone.
The Mayor of London is currently consulting on extending the ULEZ in 2021 from Central London out to the South Circular, which runs through Lewisham. This wouldn’t include the South Circular itself or any of the south of our borough.
Lewisham Liberal Democrats don’t think this goes far enough. Air quality is at illegal levels across all of Lewisham and more urgent action is needed. We’re calling for the Mayor to extend the ULEZ to all of Lewisham and all of London.
Chris Maines, Chair of London Liberal Democrats, said:
"Air pollution doesn't stop at the border of the South Circular, so why do these proposals? We want Lewisham Council to submit strong representations to Sadiq Khan to ensure that all of Lewisham is protected urgently".
Sign our petition here. We’ll be submitting signatures to the Mayor of London in support of the extension of the ULEZ.
You can find out more and complete the consultation here, and provide your comments until 28th February 2018.
