Cllr Jenni Clutten is concerned about the installation of new mosquito devices

Liberal Democrat councillors have expressed concern over the installation of several "mosquito" devices outside private properties in Lewisham. The devices emit a high pitch sonic frequency designed to be heard by those under 20 and are intended to stop gangs and large groups from congregating.

Whitefoot councillor Dan Houghton said, "On several occasions I have been walking on the pavement only to be subjected to the effects of this sonic device. I am 32 years old - not under 20 anymore I'm afraid - and I have to say that it really is a very unpleasant experience."

Downham councillor Jenni Clutten said, "It is bad enough that these devices are targeted towards young people - but the fact that they don't even appear to work properly makes their effects even more indiscriminate. I am really concerned that people are installing them outside their properties without thinking of the consequences."

Cllr Houghton has raised the matter with both the local police and Lewisham Council's Trading Standards officers, and is awaiting a response
