The Liberal Democrats have made spectacular gains on Lewisham Council and come second in the race for Mayor. Labour saw their 2002 majority of 36 seats wiped out while the Lib Dems were up 13 seats on their 2002 total of four. Lewisham's Lib Dems now have a record 17 councillors across the borough. Following the 2002 elections, Lewisham's Lib Dem councillors rose to seven during a spate of by-election successes. On 4th May the Lib Dems built upon these successes to make a further ten gains in Blackheath, Forest Hill, Lewisham Central, Lee Green and Whitefoot wards.
