Lewisham rent arrears keep on rising
Questioning from Liberal Democrat councillors has revealed the full extent of rent arrears in Lewisham. At a recent full council meeting it was revealed that rent arrears in Lewisham for the end of the financial year (end of March 2007) stood at £8.8 million. Just a year ago the rent arrears were £7.7 million. Back in 2004 arrears were £6.8 million.

Commenting on these figures Housing spokesperson, Cllr Brian Robson, said:

"It is shameful that when the number of council tenants is falling in Lewisham that the level of rent arrears has risen so rapidly.

"In the last year alone the level of rent arrears have soared by over £1million, which is an increase of 14 per cent.

"When so many repairs are needed to council properties it is just shameful that rent arrears are being allowed to grow so rapidly.

"The Audit Commission has revealed on a number of occasions the poor management of Lewisham's council housing stock. These statistics are just further evidence of how badly things have been managed by Labour in Lewisham."
