Forest Hill's Liberal Democrat councillor, Philip Peake, expressed alarm and dismay at today's closure of yet another of Forest Hill's amenities, following a safety inspection of the ceiling at Forest Hill Library.
"This comes hot on the heels of the closure of the pools next door. I'm alarmed by this steady decay of our local culture and leisure facilities," Philip commented.
"This is a serious failure of management by the Mayor and the other Labour bosses at the town hall. As with the pools, Labour's mismanagement has again put people at risk of injury."
"Officers are estimating that the adult fiction section of the library will be shut for at four months and the rest for two months. I would like to see the council make alternative arrangements, such as a temporary structure, for the many people who use this service."

NOTES
The ceiling of Forest Hill Library was inspected following concerns from members of staff and was found to be suffering water ingress and cracked plaster which amounted to a serious health and safety problem.
The Library will be completely closed for a week and reopened with the adult fiction section closed off. Repair work - during which the entire library will be closed - should start in 8 weeks and will take 2 months.
This follows the closure last month of Forest Hill Pools, previously the oldest working Victorian baths in London after a similar structural failure in the roof.
