Call to put bulldozing of Ladywell Pool on hold
- following closure of Forest Hill Pools
Liberal Democrat Mayoral candidate, Chris Maines, has called on Lewisham's Mayor to put the closure of Ladywell Pool on hold, following the Council's sudden decision to close both Forest Hill pools for health and safety reasons.

"We are still waiting for Downham pool to re-open, eleven years after it closed for health and safety reasons. The decision to close Forest Hill and Ladywell will make it very difficult for families to find an alternative place to swim." said Chris Maines.

"The sensible thing for the Mayor to do, is to put the Ladywell closure on hold." he added. The Forest Hill pools and Leisure facilities have been closed with immediate effect following a recent structural survey. The survey report stated that the condition of the roof over the main pool was causing concerns. The pools will not now be re-opened until after a full refurbishment.

"It comes down to a question of trust in the Council," claims Chris Maines, "similar action was taken in Downham and the Mayor and Council clearly lacked the drive and determination to get a new pool up and running. It will have taken twelve years for the Downham pool to reopen."

"The rest of London is looking forward to exciting new facilities for the 2012 Olympics, whilst Lewisham residents are losing pools and watching facilities disappear." said Chris Maines.
