Lewisham Council amongst worst in Britain for recycling
The commitment towards recycling shown by Lewisham's Mayor has been attacked by his Liberal Democrat challenger. "The figures for Lewisham are appalling," says Chris Maines. "We are still among the worst areas in the country for recycling according to figures published last week."

National league tables published by the Government show Lewisham to be the third worst Council in London and among the bottom ten nationally. The latest figures available show that residents in Lewisham recycle 10.2% of their total household waste compared with 30.47% in nearby Bexley.

"The Council was already languishing at the bottom of the recycling league table. In 2004/5 it only managed an increase of 1.8% in waste recycling. It is a shameful record," says Chris Maines. "The public know the damage we are doing to the planet and want their local council to help them tackle the problem. In Lewisham we have seen too little action, too late in the day. Other Councils are far more active in promoting composting for homes with gardens, recycling facilities for flats and collecting a far greater variety of recyclable items."

"The Liberal Democrats are committed to double Lewisham's recycling rates, we will also be working far harder to reduce the amount of waste created in the first place and we want to help local businesses play their part in cutting down on refuse," Chris Maines said.

Note: The figures published by Defra show that Lewisham recycled 9.98% composted 0.22% giving a total 0f 10.8% of household waste being recycled. An increase on the previous year of 1.80%. The Government target for next year is 18%.
