The Liberal Democrat victory in Gordon Brown's home town in last week's
parliamentary by-election threatens Labour's hold on Lewisham Town Hall,
according to local mayoral hopeful Chris Maines.
"Labour have lost the confidence of families that have supported them
for generations. That's true in Scotland and here in Lewisham," said
Chris Maines after congratulating Willie Rennie, Britain's newest MP.
"People are fed up with Labour; too much spin and too little delivery.
When people see that the Liberal Democrats are in a position to beat Labour,
they support us," added Chris Maines
The result of the by-election held in the Scottish seat of Dunfermline
and West Fife is being described by the press as a disaster for both the
Labour party and the Conservatives. The drop in the Tory party vote is
being seen as a failure for the party's new leader and demonstrates that
they are still not trusted by the British public.
"Where the Liberal Democrats are the clear challengers, such
as here in Lewisham, they gain many Labour votes because people realise
there is no danger that the Tories can benefit'" said Chris Maines.
The 16% swing achieved last Thursday is sufficient for the Liberal
Democrats to make sweeping gains across Lewisham borough in May's local
elections.
"I think the appeal of the Liberal Democrats for a fairer, greener and
more democratic Britain is growing. Our members in Lewisham are even
more enthusiastic and determined to win in Lewisham," Chris added.
