Lewisham Council is expected to hear soon whether it has secured funding for its proposed new secondary school on the site of Ladywell Leisure Centre.
Despite widespread opposition Labour’s Mayor, Steve Bullock, plans to demolish the Leisure Centre in 2007 to make way for the proposed new secondary school.
Replacement leisure facilities are planned for Sundermead but work has yet to start and the new pool probably won’t open until 2011!
Local Lib Dem campaigner, Dave Edgerton, said: “It is one of children's greatest achievement to be able to first swim a width of the swimming pool and then a length.
“Lewisham should not be deprived of leisure facilities when there is no sign of work beginning on the replacement facilities.”
