“Massive changes are coming to Lewisham Town Centre,” said
Lewisham Central Liberal Democrat Councillor, Andrew
Milton.
Almost £16 million and further private and public sector
investments has been received to fund work on the Lewisham Gateway
Development. The redevelopment is expected to replace the existing roundabout between Lewisham station and the Town Centre with an H-shaped road layout and making pedestrian
links between the two easier.
The development aims to provide new opportunities for residents in
Lewisham Town Centre, promote business success and enhance
open spaces. Work is due to start on the Gateway Development in
December 2006 and should be finished in 2012.
Welcoming the news, local Lib Dem campaigner Seyed Aghamiri
said: “The regeneration of Lewisham is long overdue. Lewisham needs more life. More habitation. And more leisure facilities - including a cinema.”
However, local Lib Dems have some concerns. Cllr Milton said:
“About half of those who completed a recent Lib Dem residents’ survey said they weren’t adequately consulted about the plans for the town centre. There will also be major
disruption while the Gateway project is being built and the new traffic layout won’t solve the current problems with congestion and pollution.”
Seyed added: “I would have liked to have seen more green space and trees in the plans for Lewisham and less concrete jungle.”
