* Collection of plastic bottles welcomed
* Only one year's funding for weekly collection
* Introduce recycling for local traders - say Lib Dems
The introduction of a weekly recycling collection from October, has been welcomed by Lewisham Lib Dems. The Council’s doorstep recycling collection has been fortnightly until now. The doorstep service will now include the collection of plastic bottles, which local Lib Dems have
been campaigning for during the past two years.
Lewisham Lib Dem campaigner, Dave Edgerton, welcomed the move but added, “the new service may only be for a limited period because it is being funded by a one year grant from central government. We will urge the Council to continue the service after the initial funding period. Recycling must be made simple if we are to persuade more people to do it.”
The Lib Dems are also calling on Lewisham Council to collect recycling from local shops and businesses. Local traders have to set up their own recycling arrangements with private contractors, and pay for it!
It’s hardly surprising that there’s so much cardboard packaging and bottles just going into the ordinary waste stream.
