Important improvements to a Zebra crossing on Bromley Road, Downham, are now close to completion.
The improvements are intended to enhance pedestrian and vehicle safety at the junction. A fatal
accident on the Bromley Road crossing earlier this year prompted urgent calls by local residents
for increased safety measures.
Work on the zebra crossing started three weeks ago and include the widening of the crossing, the
introduction of double beacons with illuminated spot lights, additional zigzag road markings, new
speed warning signs, and additional road surface treatment (anti-skid).
It is anticipated, that these new changes will be part of an ongoing and comprehensive review of
the traffic signal junction at Downham Way and Bromley Road.
Councillor Mark Morris (Group Leader-Downham Ward) said:
“It is vital that every step is taken to ensure the pedestrian crossing is as safe as possible for
Downham residents. As everyone knows this is a busy road and the impact of cars switching lanes or
driving too fast along Bromley Road is a serious concern for pedestrians.
“Speeding and dangerous roads are a common concern raised by local residents in Downham.”
