MPs should support campaign for local cinemas, say Lib Dems
Richard Thomas, Lib Dem Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Lewisham East, has today urged all local MPs and the council to support the cross-party parliamentary campaign to support local cinemas.

The need for a local cinema in Lewisham has been highlighted by many politicians. Lewisham is one of only two boroughs in Greater London hasn't got a single cinema within its borders.

Liberal Democrats are suggesting that the Government should reform planning law to remove cinemas from the use class category D2 (Leisure) so that any change of use involving a cinema building requires planning permission, and to allow local authorities to provide business rate relief to local cinemas.

Richard Thomas is urging local MPs, including Bridget Prentice, MP for Lewisham East to sign a parliamentary motion supporting the campaign and to take this matter up with the Deputy Prime Minister.

Lewisham East Prospective Parliamentary Candidate, Lib Dem Richard Thomas said:

"Local cinemas make an important contribution to the economic and social vitality of local communities and to social inclusion. But the local council has limited powers in this area.

"I have written to the Mayor of Lewisham and Bridget Prentice MP urging them to ask the Government to reform planning law to remove cinemas from the use class category D2 (Leisure) so that any change of use involving a cinema building requires planning permission, and to allow local councils like Lewisham to provide business rate relief to local cinemas."
