Doorstep recycling collection now includes glass and cans
Residents across the borough can now use their green boxes to recycle cans and glass. However, research by the Liberal Democrats has shown many of them don't know this.

Councillor Daniel Houghton was aware that many residents in his ward did not know about the new service. But when he asked Lewisham's Cabinet on Wednesday, the problem turned out to be much more widespread.

Councillor Houghton explained, "Since August 2nd, the Council will recycle cans and glass put in ANY green box in the borough. They hired a company to put leaflets to put leaflets through everyone's door to tell them this.

"Unfortunately, many homes were missed out right across the borough, from Downham to Brockley. Even the Cabinet Member for the Environment admitted he didn't get one.

"The Council also mentioned the service in local newspapers. But they neglected to mention that this service was available to everyone with a green box. Many people now think this service is only available in other parts of the borough.

"It's wonderful that this service is available. It's just a pity so many people don't know about it!"
