Lib Dem Motion Urges Mayor to Protect Leisure Centre
Lewisham Council have delayed a final decision on the fate of Ladywell Leisure Centre. The popular leisure centre is due to be demolished to make way for a new secondary school.

Although the Council plan to replace it with a new centre to be built on another site, there is likely to be a period of at least three years without a leisure centre in the central Lewisham area.

Lib Dem Councillor, Julia Fletcher, put forward a motion to a meeting of the full Council calling on the new leisure centre to be built before the Ladywell site is demolished. Cllr. Fletcher said the alternative should be to find another site for the new school and save the Ladywell Leisure Centre altogether.

Ladywell Leisure Centre only recently re-opened after being closed for 18 months for asbestos removal and renovation.

Despite Councillor Fletcher's motion, a second motion was put forward by Labour delaying the decision by a few weeks to allow for other sites to be considered. This was contrary to Labour Mayor, Steve Bullock's claims that all options had already been considered.

A cross-community campaign to save the centre will be holding a public meeting on 7th October to consider their next moves.
